DPS to lay off more than 100 troopers

LUBBOCK, Texas -

A memo from the Department of Public Safety Director reveals the agency intends to lay off more than 100 troopers, and will eliminate 60 positions statewide.

The memo indicates it's part of eliminating the so-called "retire-rehire"program. It helps DPS field highly trained personnel who, in return, draw a salary along with their monthly pension.

Plans call for those troopers to be cut from the agency by the end of May. It's part of the state's budget shortfall.

On Friday 97 new troopers started patrolling the state's highways after completing training.
