Birmingham Bowl 2017 Birmingham Bowl 2017

Got question for the Double T staff, click here

The Double T 97-3 staff answer the question, "What are your initial thoughts on The Red Raiders bowl game selections and opponent?"

Jamie Lent - The Morning Drive
I'm not going to try and tell you that I think Birmingham is some terrific bowl destination. I'm also not going to tell you that it is a better city to visit than Dallas. However, for the Tech Football players who have probably all been to Dallas numerous times in their life, I think going to Birmingham is better. Quite simply it is just something different for those guys.

Now, as far as the match-up goes, I'm not a huge fan. I would much rather see the Red Raiders face off with a big named program and not USF. I think USF is a good team but I do think Tech has a good chance to come out with a win.

Zach Logsdon - The Morning Drive
I'm excited that it's a good matchup. Way better than North Texas in the Heart of Dallas Bowl or something of that nature. But at 6-6, this bowl season isn't about the bowl at all really. It's about the practice reps that these young guys (specifically McLane Carter and Jett Duffey) can get leading up to the game. You can get a head start on what could be (and I would say needs to be) a big 2018 season.

Zach Sparkman - The Bottom Line
I’m not thrilled with Bowl/location, as the Birmingham bowl is not a prestigious bowl I’d say a significant drop in perception from the heart of Dallas bowl and cactus bowl. I like the matchup, from an entertainment perspective but maybe not from an easy win perspective. South Florida is a good team with a good QB and is coming off a thrilling game against UCF and they rank near the bottom in red zone defense which has been one the red raider offense’s bigger struggles this season so it should be fun game I’m looking forward to watching.

Geoff Haxton - The Bottom Line
I thought it was a perfect reflection of the season. Would've loved for Tech to stay in state but, squeaking your way to 6-6 gets you Birmingham. Now, the trick is getting truly fired up about it. The team that wants to be there the most usually wins in bowls. I think Tech can get to that level. USF is an opponent to be respected. They'll be good. Tech made a bowl. Be happy you're still practicing and improving a program that turns out still has it's coaching staff intact. Improve for next year. Get fired up and drill the Bulls.

Rob Verby - Fox 34 Sports Director and Press Box on 100.7 The Score
Surprised, but think it’s a pretty good match-up.  If Tech’s offense can play a complete game, they should win a shoot-out. Flowers will be hard to contain as a dual-threat QB.  Tech wins 48-41.

Honestly, making a bowl made my year.  I don't care if it's the blue water in the toilet bowl or the how cares dot com dot org bowl.  Making a bowl game is better than not making one.  As for Birmingham, never been there before.  Not sure Tech has ever been there.  It's something new.  I'm in. The Tech defense is going to have to play like they did verses Texas, Houston and Arizona State.  Tech has until the 23rd to get the offense working right.  They are going to have to want to be there.  If they don't, it will be the blowout of the year.

Chris Williamson - Sunday Sports Blitz
I feel that based off  the way the season played out that we are right where we need to be. Our play was very inconsistent and thus we played our way into a lower level bowl game. That being said any bowl game is better than no bowl game if for no other reason than to get the extra practice time and tv exposure. South Florida is a solid team and would be a good win if we can get it.

Kyle Stafford - The Sunday Sports Blitz
I think the bowl game presents an opportunity for Texas Tech to pick up a quality win to close out the season.  USF is a talented team and shouldn’t be taken lightly. The Red Raiders should have plenty of motivation to finish the year 7-6.
