Ex-wife of musician's accused killer witnessed killing outside Lubbock church

Posted: Updated:

The trial for a man accused of killing a popular Lubbock musician began Tuesday.

Pete Garcia, Jr., 56, reportedly shot and killed 51-year old Orestes West Garza outside Saint Elizabeth's Catholic University Parish in February of last year.

In opening statements, the prosecutor claims the attack followed a months-long feud with Garza and Garcia's ex-wife, Judy, claiming Garcia "could not let this thing go."

Pete Garcia's defense attorney entered the plea of not guilty.

He claims Garcia was trying to find out the "truth for himself" when Judy refused to speak to him.

She told investigators Garcia repeatedly threatened her via phone messages and she witnessed the murder.

The trial is expected to last at least through the end of the week.
