Alt-right Breitbart drags Texas Tech into racist column controversy

Posted: Updated:

A recent opinion column written by a student for the Texas State University's student newspaper sparks the wrong kind of attention for Texas Tech.

The column's headline reads "Your DNA is an abomination" referring to white people.

The alt-right news platform Breitbart seized on it.

It misidentified University Star columnist Rudy Martinez as a Red Raider and not as a Texas State student.

"It was a pretty controversial piece, and especially in a state like Texas and in the place it was in the state of Texas," Daily Toreador Editor-in-Chief McKenzi Morris said. "So I wasn't super surprised that it was picked up by national media or anything. We were very shocked to see it somehow connected back to Texas Tech because that sparked with us. Is the student somehow connected to Texas Tech or is this piece connected to Texas Tech at all?"

After hearing from the editors at Tech's newspaper, Breitbart fixed the problem.
