Texas Tech honors distinguished military alumni

Texas Tech commemorated its alumni who've distinguished themselves in military service. A Wall of Honor now stands in Drane Hall.

This serves as a tribute to their courage, service and sacrifice. It's also an inspiration to current and future Red Raiders.

Six honorees were recognized at the ceremony, including two Medal of Honor recipients and a Congressional Space Medal of Honor recipient.

"There's this whole issue of civil - military divide,"Lou Ortiz said. "We want people to appreciate and understand not just the sacrifice of the service members, but the sacrifice of the family members, extended family, they go along with that when somebody lays down their life for their country."

Ortiz says the veterans programs at Tech only just recently found out about a second Medal of Honor recipient from the university.

Herman Wallace received the nation's top honor for his service in World War II.

Ortiz credits social media with the find, so if you have a family member or know anyone from Tech who's received a similar honor, like the Navy Cross or the Bronze Star, call it in.
