Near-record cold tonight, sunny days ahead

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

THIS AFTERNOON: It's a sunny and breezy day behind the cold front that moved through this morning. At mid-afternoon it's around 50 in Amarillo, upper 60s Lubbock and 90s from Dallas to Austin. The front will continue moving south, with colder air following on this gusty north wind.

TONIGHT: It'll be cold, low in Lubbock 38. The average low for Oct. 10 is 50; the record is 37. The north wind will stay up, around 10-15mph, which will drop the wind chill into the lower 30s tomorrow morning.

forecast low temperature

West and north of Lubbock it should get a few degrees colder. We can't rule out a brief freeze around Muleshoe, Farwell and Dimmitt. Also, there's a slight chance for light rain over the NW South Plains/SW Panhandle. Both the clouds passing over the Panhandle as well as the north wind staying up all across the region are two things actually helping us avoid a freeze. A clear sky with light wind is preferred for the temperature to really drop off.

SUNNY DAYS: Tomorrow's high near 63, the wind diminishing through the day. A south wind will help the temperature climb into the 70s Wednesday, then 80s on Thursday.

WEEKEND: There's a slight chance for rain Saturday into early Sunday. It'll get a little cooler Sunday and Monday behind the next cold front, though it doesn't look as strong as today's front.

7-day forecast

Have a great rest of your day. Whitney will be tracking the cold temperature readings tomorrow morning and will have an update here.
