Kickoff: 7 p.m. 100.7 The Score
Lubbock-Cooper Pirates (3-1)
Clovis N.M. Wildcats (3-1)
The Lubbock-Cooper football team returns home for its final non-district game of the season. Last week the Pirates made a four and half hour bus trip to Weatherford and beat the Kangaroos 28-26. LCP’s offense came to play early with two long touchdowns, one of 75 yards and one of 54 yards to lead 14-0 in the first quarter. The district 3-6A Kangaroos made a game of it by going into the locker room tied at 14 and getting one last possession at the end of the game with a chance to win it on a 51 yard field goal. The field goal attempt was set up when Lubbock-Cooper fumbled the ball while in the victory formation as they tried to run out the clock. The Pirates improve to 3-1 on the season and will host Clovis N.M. this Friday night at 7 p.m. on 100.7 The Score. Lubbock-Cooper continuing its double quarterback system, has had both quarterbacks start 2 games each. Brenden Mehl has passed for 597 yards with 6 touchdowns while Cole Carter who likes to run more often has tossed for 212 yards and 3 touchdowns. Running back Eli Boyd has found the end zone 3 times this year averaging 86.3 yards per game.
Clovis: The Wildcats will be coming to Lubbock off a bye week and a 3-1 record to start the 2017 season. One other thing Clovis will bring with them to Pirate Stadium, a new head coach. Former offensive coordinator Cal Fullerton was promoted to head coach back in February after long time head coach Eric Roanhaus retired following his 39th season leading the Wildcat program. In that span, Clovis had won 10 Blue Trophies (State Championships) with the last one coming in 2001. Roanhaus left as New Mexico’s all-time winningest football coach, with 343 victories. This season the Wildcats are 3-1 with wins over Hobbs (33-24), Carlsbad (34-14), and Goddard (41-0). The lone loss on the year is from defending New Mexico State Champions Rio Rancho falling 34-31 in overtime. Clovis is led by senior quarterback Brandt Davis who has thrown for 451 yards with 6 touchdowns and 1 interception. Senior running back Demerious Milton has rushed for 461 yards and 6 touchdowns on the ground. The Wildcat defense has sacked the opposing quarterback 10 times and has 4 interceptions on the year.
