Fewer women infected with HPV

Fewer adult women are becoming infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV), including women who never received a vaccination for it. Researchers analyzed the results from a federal health survey, which revealed a 32% decrease in HPV infections among women 18-59 years old. Younger women saw the biggest benefits, with nearly a two-thirds drop in infections between 2009 and 2014. And unvaccinated women also experienced a decline in infections. Study authors say it appears enough women have gotten the HPV vaccine to create a "herd immunity" .. that is providing protection to unvaccinated females. The team predicts HPV and cervical cancer rates will fall even more, as more boys receive the vaccine.
