Man convicted of gunning down rival gang member sentenced

LUBBOCK, Texas -

A man convicted of murdering a rival gang member a decade ago has been sentenced to 70 years in prison. 

A jury found Earl Washington, 34, guilty of gunning down John Wilkerson, 28, in his east Lubbock driveway in September 2007.

Before handing down the sentence, the judge said whether Washington pulled the trigger or was a party to the murder, the jury got it right. 

Wilkerson's sister said this day has been coming for a long time. She told Washington it was likely her family's request for peace after her brother's murder that kept him alive. 

Washington's attorney said they will file an appeal.
