LUBBOCK -

Far away from home, or what is left of it. Thousands of Texas Tech students come from the devastated Texas Gulf Coast. Gabby Jordan is one of those students. She is wrapping up her senior year, and right now has a lot on her mind.

"I was getting uneasy, before I knew it was getting really serious," she said.

She's from Groves, Texas, which is near Beaumont. She said her hometown is barely recognizable.

"Originally our area was supposed to get about 20 inches of rain, but it has gotten close to 46 inches," she said. "So, almost twice that."

She said her family is safe and doing fine.

"We are in the process of building a house," Jordan said. "So, we are staying with our grandparents, and their house so a little bit of water but nothing near as much as some of our neighbors have gotten. So we are really lucky."

It is tough for this college student to be away from home.

"The hardest thing about being so far away, it is about 10 hours from here," she said. "There's really no way for me to get back there even if I wanted too to help out.

Her family is surviving, and she said they're inspired.

"Everyone has come together," Jordan said. "I mean just people you don't even know going into houses on boats, jet-skis, canoes, kayaks, literally anything that can get them through that water."

According to the university, more than 5,000 students from South East Texas.

Freshman Reagan Burchett said it was surreal to see everything unfold from afar.

"I have friends that live in the actual city, and they were sending me pictures," she said. "I have a friend who is going to school in Houston and she was trapped in her apartment. She couldn't leave at all."

Tech student Aaron Arrington said his family was able to get most of their valuables out.

"It is tough," he said. "All my friends that I grew up with they really really got it bad. It is saddening to see all their houses destroyed, they don't even know what to do next, there is no telling."

Harris County is one of the most represented counties on campus aside from Lubbock. Tech is even starting a Hurricane Harvey Scholarship Relief Fund to help students who have been impacted.
