Bus drivers in high demand as school year approaches

LUBBOCK, Texas -

With the start of school approaching, districts around the nation are facing a shortage of bus drivers.

Of the nation's 50 largest school bus operators, 22 percent call the shortage severe and five percent say they're desperate to find drivers.

However, that's not the case with Lubbock ISD.

"As far as the beginning of school, we are ready to go," said Nancy Sharp, Lubbock ISD executive director of communications. "We have drivers for all of the routes. But we encourage people who want to be a bus driver, who are interested in that flexible job, to be able to come and apply for us at Durham School Services."

Ten percent of LISD students use the bus system to get to and from school.

In the district, 60 hours of training are required. Sharp says if you'd like to apply, visit the Durham School Services building at 55th and MLK.
