LUBBOCK, Texas -

The West Texas A&M University Police Department at WTAMU announced the loss of an officer.

Corporal Monty D. Platt passed away yesterday evening at the Lubbock UMC. Corporal Platt had served with the University Police Department since 1996.

The death of Corporal Monty Platt was a result of medical complications from being bitten by a feral cat while on duty, responding to a police call two weeks ago.

Last Thursday he was not feeling well, and was taken to an urgent care center with a severe reaction to medication prescribed to prevent infections from the cat bite. Corporal Platt was admitted to ICU on Thursday Evening. Friday morning he was transferred to the burn unit at UMC in Lubbock, because the injuries suffered from the medication were so severe. He was heavily sedated, placed on a ventilator, and treated for the wounds.

Last evening his kidneys shut down and his blood temperature dropped. Later in the evening he passed away.

Corporal Platt’s arrangements are being handled by the Brooks Funeral Directors in Canyon. A memorial service will be conducted at 10:00am on Friday, August 11th, at the St. Ann’s Church at 605 38th St, in Canyon; followed by a graveside memorial at the Dreamland Cemetery Association at 26500 U.S. 87 in Canyon.

The WTAMU Police Department stated on their Facebook page "Campus Law Enforcement lost a great officer in Corporal Monty D. Platt. All of us at the University Police Department extend our prayers to the family during this difficult time."
