Communities in Schools of the South Plains hosted the "5th Annual David Montalvo Scholarship Jam." The live music event brought eight different acts from all genres together to play in remembrance of their loved one, David Montalvo. The event is sponsored yearly by the friends and family of Montalvo.
He died in October 2012 from cancer. The event was created after he died, started off small, and has continued to grow and honor his legacy.

Alma Cunningtubby, the event coordinator said, "David served in the US Marine corp. He was passionate about the marine corp and so we wanted to tie in all of David's passions which was music and the marine corp and education."

The live music went on until dawn at the South Plains Shrine Club. There was a five dollar cover with all proceeds going toward the David Montalvo Scholarship Fund.

Education Rocks!

Media and public are welcome to attend the 5th Annual David Montalvo Scholarship Jam. The event showcases a variety of live music from local bands. All proceeds go back to the David Montalvo Scholarship Fund awarded by Communities in Schools of the South Plains. Since 2013, the DMSJ has raised approximately $10,000, awarding 7 different scholarships to recipients in the local and surrounding area. Last year’s event was able to award 3 local high school graduates with scholarships. The DMSJ hopes to continue to provide financial assistance to more students in the South Plains area. The event is sponsored by family and friends of David Montalvo.

Background Information: The David Montalvo Scholarship Jam began four years ago in 2013, after the passing of David Montalvo, who lost his battle with cancer. Montalvo, who worked for Communities in Schools was passionate about having kids stay in school, graduating, and going on to attend college. He encouraged and empowered students to pursue an academic career and succeed in life. Montalvo was equally passionate about music, hence our motto, “Education Rocks!”

David Montalvo was a Communities in Schools site coordinator that began his career at OL Slaton Middle School then moved to Lubbock High School. He worked with and supported students through CIS for about 7 years. In October 2012, David learned he had stage 4 squamous carcinoma (head and neck cancer). He continued to work extremely hard for the organization even through his treatments. During this time, he worked from home as much as he could and even organized his last chess tournament just a couple of months before his passing. Weeks after his death, several of his friends and family, some of which are local musicians, wanted to create an event that would raise money to advocate for higher education and continue David's legacy. The David Montalvo Scholarship Jam is an event where local bands volunteer their time and talent to entertain throughout the day. All profits from the event are given to Communities in Schools of the South Plains so that scholarships can be awarded to students in Lubbock and/or the surrounding area. In the beginning, DMSJ awarded one large scholarship, but is now able to award both a large scholarship and additional smaller scholarships. Scholarship recipients are presented with their award at the Communities in Schools Gala in the spring. With the help of family and friends, David's love for education and music have been combined to assist college bound students in furthering their career and educational goals.
