REPORT: Former FOX News chief Roger Ailes dead at 77

The family of former FOX News chairman Roger Ailes announced his death Thursday morning.

A statement to Drudge Report from his wife, Elizabeth Ailes, reads in part: “I am profoundly sad and heartbroken to report that my husband, Roger Ailes, passed away this morning. Roger was a loving husband to me, to his son Zachary, and a loyal friend to many."

TMZ reports Ailes suffered a fall eight days ago and hit his head. Sources say he fell unconscious and his condition worsened. He went into a coma late Wednesday and died that night. Ailes had reportedly been suffering from a variety of health conditions.

Ailes became the founding CEO of FOX News in 1996. He resigned as president and chairman last year amid sexual harassment allegations from a number of female staffers.
