An apartment building where two people died in a fire is set to be demolished by the city. A two-alarm blaze heavily damaged the Oscar Apartments near 17th and Avenue K on November 13, 2014. Dawn Rae East, 41, and Sharon Gay Courtney, 58, were found dead on the second floor. The building has been vacant since then.
Councilman Victor Hernandez said the owner didn't make necessary repairs, so the city got a court order to demolish the structure. The tear down to be completed by the end of August. Hernandez said a lien will then be placed on the property to recover the cost of the demolition.
