LPD officer seriously injured in overnight pursuit

An LPD officer was seriously injured while arresting a suspected car thief.

Corporal Ryan Durret thought he was helping a stranded motorist at 19th and Iola when he discovered the vehicle was reportedly stolen, according to police.

Durret confronted the driver, Jose Escarcega, 23, who reportedly tried to get away by jumping into the back of a passing pickup truck.

When Corporal Durret tried to catch him on foot, the suspect got out of the pickup and ran around the LPD patrol unit and jumped in the driver's seat.

"Officer Durret tried to apprehend him at that point, and with him still halfway in the vehicle, the suspect put it in drive and accelerated at a high rate of speed and they collided into a traffic signal pole. Officer Durret was thrown from the vehicle," Lieutenant Ray Mendoza said.

Police report when the officer was on the ground, the suspect started beating him.

Shortly after, police arrived and both were taken to the hospital. Corporal Durret sustained serious injures while Escarcega has minor injuries.

Escarcega is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.
