Former Tech student asks for new trial in drunk driving case

A former Texas Tech student who pleaded guilty to a fatal drunk driving crash is asking again for a new trial in state district court. Jeena Roberts, 26, is serving a 15-year concurrent sentence for intoxication manslaughter and intoxicated assault. She slammed into an SUV in 2010.  The crash killed Linda Smaltz and seriously injured Karen Wolf who were passengers in that vehicle.

Roberts pleaded guilty in 2012. Roberts first filed a motion for a new trial in 2014. Included in the claims that Roberts did not voluntarily plead guilty and was denied her right to testify.
