A former Texas Tech student was on hand in Columbia for the retirement of the Confederate battle flag Friday.
Jennifer Jasso says she left work to go to the South Carolina State House grounds and be a part of history.
"It was just a great feeling to be around all these different people from different races, and we were all excited and very happy to see the flag come down," Jasso said. "There were some protesters out there with their Confederate flags, but overall things were very positive, and it was pretty peaceful."
Jasso says there was a joyous atmosphere with the crowd singing and chanting in support of the removal of the flag.
